Posh

So often we hear the comment “posh accent.” We looked it up just to check. Funny.

Posh defined as:
Smart and fashionable.

As usual for VW and I, they often assume we are Canadian. We have heard that often over the years when we traveled.

As I understand it, a posh accent in England means one that implies money or prestige--that one's family had money to send someone to the best schools, and/or one goes to Oxford or Cambridge.

Hugh Grant makes a comment on the Bridget Jones dvd that Renee Zellweger was such a good mimic that her accent kept getting too posh for her character.

I'm not sure if it's a myth, but the word posh might have originally been an acronym for passengers on transatlantic boat trips who asked for Port Out, Starboard Home, as they were the nicest cabins on the ship.

Thanks for the FYI. There are many language barriers, despite the common English language! Although, I definitely don't think of ourselves or our accents as posh. Cheers.
